Associate Chair's Welcome
Welcome to the graduate program in Civil and Environmental Engineering at ASU. If you are a current student at ASU, I hope ASU and CEE in particular, are providing you with an invigorating, dynamic and fulfilling environment in meeting your academic goals and aspirations. The faculty is here to help you in this endeavor. If you are a prospective student, I hope your “due diligence” will show that we are one of the top graduate programs in the country and worthy of your trust. This web site contains all the information that you need in order to apply to the graduate program, details of the courses that we offer, the graduation requirements for the different degrees and how the graduate program is administered.
I have been with ASU since 1983 and have seen the transformations that have taken the department in the last two decades into the top 25 departments in the country and well within the top 15 public universities (1). Our goal is to be a top-notch Research I institution.
The communities and industries in the Phoenix metropolitan area actively support our graduate program. From environmental engineering students interacting with City of Phoenix engineers in an EPA-sponsored project, or transportation engineering students working with ADOT engineers on a FHWA-sponsored project or structural engineering students working with Honeywell engineers on a FAA-sponsored project, graduate students gain professional experience that other universities cannot offer. These interactions are reflected in research expenditures– today we carry out approximately $4 million dollars of sponsored research per year. Most of this money is used to support full-time graduate students as research assistants.
