Degree Programs

Welcome to Arizona State University, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. We welcome your interest in our graduate program. The main campus, located in Tempe, is as of 2005 the largest university campus in terms of student enrollment in the United States, with a student body of 51,612.

We have three graduate degrees to choose from six specialty areas of study. Our faculty are involved in many research projects on the local, national, and international levels. Their expertise includes everything from study of materials for pavements, structures and geotechnical applications to arid land issues, urban engineering and environmental microbiology. We have a highly diverse graduate student population, including students from all over the world.

Degree Programs

MS (Master of Science)
This degree requires completion of 24 credit hours, 6 hours of thesis. Students write and defend a thesis.

MSE (Master of Science in Engineering)
This degree requires you to complete 30 credit hours of course work and a comprehensive exam.

PhD (Doctor of Philosophy)
This degree requires completion of 84 credit hours (30 hours can be from the masters degree) and successful defense of dissertation. This degree also requires a comprehensive exam and approval of the dissertation prospectus to be eligible for doctoral candidacy. After entering candidacy, students complete their research, write and defend their dissertation.
